Who Should You Listen to When it Comes to Marketing, Branding & USP?

A lively discussion started last week when I referred to an article published by Michael Masterson on the Clayton Makepeace website. Here is the article. Opinions increased, people started adding long paragraphs to my Facebook page to explain why they (respectfully) thought Michael was wrong and that they often like Clayton, but they thought they weren't was not the goal either. My first answer was: "Who the hell are you?" ... but I got better in writing and asked for evidence of their opinion. Few gave them.

Before going any further, I should know that I respect and follow Michael Masterson and Clayton Makepeace very carefully. I have never been able to prove otherwise or see if what they teach is true or not. Why should I take such a position? His experience in business, marketing and writing makes him much better than me. They have a proven track record, are not judged, and are good for so many successful businesses that I think I can listen to and trust them.

Ironically, when I mentioned this on Facebook, someone had an argument for it. They thought they should respect all perspectives and give everyone the opportunity to express their opinion. It didn't matter how much money they made.

My answer was that even if I respect and honor everyone, it is not worth it if you cannot make money with your marketing and writing skills. People do not hire or hire a supplier because they are innovative, fun and very kind. These are wonderful additional benefits if they meet the highest demands: you can make money with your skills. If they cannot make money through marketing and writing, they will starve and have lean children.

Can you imagine applying this perspective to other industries?

Imagine an auto mechanic who is innovative, has a unique perspective and is a very kind person. However, they suggest putting water in your car rather than oil. They wholeheartedly believe and recommend to all their customers that people use truly cleaned H20 in their cars and no longer have to change the oil. Just add more H20 when you need it. We are going ahead and this person has a website, a lot of followers on Facebook and even Twitter, but the sad thing is that they are completely wrong.
