Booming: Television News Channels in India

News programs have suddenly become a sought-after commodity, competing for attention with other popular programs broadcast on various channels. All major TV channels have at least one news channel in their package. The biggest puzzle in starting a satellite channel is the 24-hour programming software. In this context, news gathering is an important task for 24-hour news channels. In this task, emerging electronic channels have always tried to cover all incidents regardless of location, place and time. These channels not only revolutionized the concept of news on Indian television, but also changed the formats of the news. In the 1990s, Doordarshan had monopolized newscasts on Indian television and made news programming an old-fashioned habit. Now private channels are making news indispensable, such as food, clothing and shelter. The highlight of all newsletters today is their timeliness, objectivity, high-gloss processing and high-quality graphics. The news has come a long way since the DD era. From local to international events, from breaking news to news analysis, from soap operas to news on page 3, every event is news. In this article, we have discussed some important changes in the way information was disseminated in India before and after the Gulf War.

Indian TV - Flash Back

Television in India is changing significantly in the current liberalized environment. To understand these changes, you need to have a brief idea of how far television channels have come so far. The trip began as an experimental base with a financial grant from UNESCO on September 15, 1959. The makeshift studio in Akashvani Bhavan, New Delhi, was selected for the location of the experiment. The experiment began with a one-hour program broadcast twice a week that looked at people's health, citizens' rights, education and traffic direction, etc. The news came out exactly six years after the launch of the television. . A daily one-hour broadcast of news bulletin was broadcast to Indian viewers. A big disadvantage of television, however, was that you could not enjoy the original color of objects due to the black and white transmission. The first multi-colored program was the Prime Minister's speech to the nation from the Red Fort in Delhi on the occasion of India's 35th Independence Day. On the same day, the DD National Channel was launched. The goal of launching the National Channel is to promote national integration and make Native Americans proud. Indian viewers also enjoyed the colorful version of the New Delhi hosted Asian Games in their living room. The coverage of major events and various occasions contributes significantly to the infiltration of television signals into the nooks and crannies of the subcontinent. The Indian government has taken all possible measures to expand the television station demographically and geographically. In 1983 television signals were available to only 28% of the population, that number had doubled by the end of 1985, and by 1990 more than 90% of the population had access to television signals. In 1984, the DD Metro Channel was added to provide exclusive entertainment to urban viewers. Initially, this channel was limited to large cities.

As a public broadcaster, Doordarshan brought the news forward naturally. All controversial issues were put under the carpet. The government in power had a strong grip on the broadcaster. Doordarshan's news bulletins were unable to provide domestic viewers with international news. Objectivity had been the first victim, as the news was all tailored to the ruling party. The information was freed from the confines of the DD newsroom and gained objectivity and credibility when New Delhi Television (NDTV) produced "The World This Week" in 1988. Everyone waited for The World This Week on Friday evening. It was the only India-based program targeting the rest of the world. World This Week was the best news broadcast in international history, delivering good news that regular DD news didn't get.
